Folding Bicycles and PMDs: Our Car-Free Weekend

Over the Deepavali weekend, Mighty Velo had the chance to be at Car-Free Weekend once again for two days! This time, we were at Telok Ayer Street on Friday from 11 am to 3 pm, and at St. Andrew’s Road on Sunday from 8 am to 12 pm. We brought along our various folding bicycles and PMDs for test rides.

What is Car-Free Weekend?

Car-Free Weekend is organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). For those who are hearing about it for the first time, roads are closed off for a few hours so bicycles, PMDs and pedestrians can ride freely during the event. It aims to encourage Singaporeans to ditch the cars and switch to a more car-lite approach.

The October edition of Car-Free Weekend took place at the Telok Ayer Loop, the Civic District and the Central Business District. It was a great opportunity for people to whip out their bicycles, e-scooters and PMDs. There were various activities. These included art installations, pet adoption drives, as well as scavenger hunts for children.

Mighty Velo brought our folding bikes and PMDs down for two Demo Days. We wanted to let the general public try out car-lite alternatives. There were those looking for a heavy-duty option. We recommended the Segway-Ninebot MAX e-scooter to them as it has a 65km range.

Some were looking for smaller, lighter devices for their first and last-mile commutes. So, we introduced the Segway-Ninebot ES2 and CarryMe compact folding bike to them. The two weighed only 12.5kg and 8.4kg respectively.

Others were afraid they wouldn’t be able to balance on two wheels. But they were promptly surprised when they saw our CarryAll adult foldable tricycle. Its large two-wheeled base was made for extra stability and support. It is also the only folding tricycle in Singapore. We also brought the Segway-Ninebot miniLITE Hoverboard for those who wanted both hands free while they ride.

Car-Free Friday at Telok Ayer Road

The first day was on Friday, 25 October. We were there in time for the lunch crowd. Also, we were conveniently situated right in the middle of the road in front of Thian Hock Keng Temple. After they’ve had their meals, many took the chance to walk around the closed roads and test ride our PMDs! Our name cards were handed out so quickly that we ran out about halfway through the event. Several participants made their decisions to get one of the PMDs for themselves, whether it was for recreational time during the weekends or to commute during lunch or to work and back home.

Even GOLD 90.5’s Gurmit Singh and Vernetta Lopez were impressed by how compact the CarryAll foldable tricycle were! And Vernetta even took it for a spin!

Car-Free Sunday at St. Andrews Road

On Sunday, our crowd expanded to include families, recreational cyclists and volunteers from the other events happening in conjunction with Car-Free Weekend. Our stall was set up right after the flag-off point for the activities. Because of this, many people took a stop to check out what we had to offer. On top of the PMDs and folding bikes we brought on Friday, we also took the new Birdy, IF Move, and Reach folding bikes with us.

The Birdy had a lot of love. It is a name that’s already known to many cycling enthusiasts, after all. The main difference, however, is that the BIRDY we had was the latest G3 series. Its design had been improved from the two prior generations of bikes. The GT and City models were available for test-riding, and those who were impressed took a name card. Many of them said they wanted to come down to our store to try the other models!

The REACH also got a lot of attention, as it is one of the fastest bikes we have available. Most of the people who were interested in the REACH were impressed that such a bike could be packed into a compact size in order to be brought overseas. They felt it was great for touring or racing on foreign soil.

Fun for the whole family.

Many families also took an interest in the CarryAll foldable tricycle. The CarryAll is great for the elderly, young children or simply anyone that wasn’t able to cycle or balance on a bicycle. The grandparents and children were able to try out the tricycle on their own, and many were excited to finally find something that was suited to their needs!

The older children were also excited to try out the miniLITE hoverboard. It took some guidance from our team, but they were on their own in no time. Of course, our friendly staff were always on the look and watching out for our test-riders!

For those who were unable to join us at the Padang, we held two live videos revealing the three new bike models to our followers. We also showcased the unique folding mechanisms of each bike in the second live video. A number of passers-by stopped to take a look at the live demos.

Over the course of two days, we got to connect with both old, new and potential customers. It was sunny, exciting and refreshing, and we would like to thank everyone who supported us both in person and online!
