With Singapore in Circuit Breaker mode due to Covid-19 pandemic, there can be a struggle for those who are looking to stay healthy throughout this period. Fear during these unprecedented times has left many of us stressed, socially isolated or just plain bored. There is no denying that our lives have turned upside down. But, there are things that we can all do to make these days better and to stay healthy. Here are some activities that you can do to stay healthy during the Covid-19 Circuit Breaker.

Activity #1 – Break a Sweat with Online Workouts

The closure of gyms since 7 April has left many hunkered down at home during the Covid-19 Circuit Breaker. While gyms and exercise studios may have closed their doors, there are still plenty of ways for you to sweat it out at home. Though switching to a home workout routine isn’t easy, you’ll be quick to find out just how fun and convenient it is to work out from the comforts of your own home.

Now that most of us are working from home, there is definitely more time for us to sleep in as we do not need to travel for work. Unlike gym sessions where you are locked into a class, you can now choose to work out on your own schedule. The convenience of our Wi-Fi connections has also allowed online workouts to be done almost anywhere.

Working out at home also gives you privacy with yourself and your laptop screen. There is no fear of judgement that you might get when you step foot into a gym. Most importantly, working out at home can be free. There are tons of free workout videos at home for you to choose based on your preferred intensity, and the area you wish to workout. All without gym equipment.

Activity #2 – Yoga

Due to Covid-19, we find ourselves living in a time of uncertainty. The lack of control in one’s life is often a primary trigger for stress. With more people working from home, many have found themselves working extended hours and attending video meetings to another. And all these can build up to stress, which can ultimately affect your mental well-being.

Working from home can get stressful at times and stress is one of the major factors that affect productivity. Yoga is one of the best ways to combat stress and its negative effects. Studies have shown that by practising yoga, your body reduces cortisol, which is the stress hormone.

Heavy workload and endless meetings can create mental clutter, hindering your decision-making skills. It can impede your concentration on tasks at hand. You can easily reap the benefits of yoga just by doing a simple 10 to 20-minute session a day!

Activity #3 – Cycling

Cycling is one of the best ways to improve your health, especially during the Covid-19 period. The benefits of cycling are almost endless. Cycling is now being promoted as one of the safer ways to get around, and also as a form of exercise.

Cycling raises your heart rate and gets the blood pumping around your body. A half-hour bike ride can also easily burn between 200 to 500 calories, limiting your chances of being overweight. Not forgetting to mention, by riding a bike, you are actually being exposed to fewer dangerous fumes than those who travel by car. Cycling combines physical exercise with being outdoors and exploring new views. Riding solo gives you time to process your worries and stress and letting them out.
