From the circuit breaker period till Phase 2, bicycles have been flying off the shelves. Covid-19 has forced people to re-think their lives and adapt to a ‘new normal’. Now that more countries have started to open up, the demand has only increased. Because of the coronavirus, cycling has exploded in popularity. People who want a bike nowadays have to find them overseas. Even in Mighty Velo, Singapore, we have gotten enquiries from all over the world. Despite most bike shops lacking in supply, why does Mighty Velo still have stocks? Additionally, why do people feel confident to buy a bike from us without test riding?
Cycling Boom Around the World
The coronavirus pandemic has influenced governments and individuals to adapt to a new normal. Worldwide, Governments encourage cycling. After all, it allows for social distancing while exercising. It can also serve as an alternative form of transportation. Cities like New York, Paris or Bogotá are embracing the new cycling wave. Even in Singapore, it is said that all HDB towns will have cycling paths by 2023, two years ahead of schedule.
People are comparing the bicycle boom to toilet paper. Unlike toilet paper, however, the waitlist is much longer. For some, their bikes will only come in 2021.
In Brooklyn, some bike shops are selling twice as many bikes as usual. In Phoenix, some bike shops are selling triple the amount. As for Britain, some places have started to collect 2021 pre-orders.
Similarly, the boom has started in Southeast Asia. Yudi Yudiantara, one of the founders of Kreuz, says they have a six-month-long waitlist stretching until February 2021.
The situation is the same in Singapore. Since circuit breaker started, more people have started exercising, despite gyms and such closing. Decathlon Singapore has mentioned bikes as one of their top-selling products.
There is an extreme demand for bikes around the world. However, the current supply does not meet demand. Since the boom was so unexpected, most bike shops did not stock up. Furthermore, the coronavirus affected global supply chains. Hence, most bike shops cannot restock.
Why Do We Have Stocks?
Mighty Velo places orders to Pacific Cycles every month. As a regular, we get priority compared to other bike shops who have started now. Since we source our bike parts from Taiwan, which did not shut down, our supply is stable. Thanks to that, we have a robust stock for many different brands and colours. We even have colours unique to Mighty Velo, Singapore.
We have been getting a lot of enquiries, even from as far as America and Germany. Despite the high shipping tax, people are willing to foot the bill.
With limited stocks globally, some dealers have to look at other places to resupply. Hence, we have been getting enquiries not only from customers but also vendors. However, even our stocks will not last forever. If this goes on, even Singapore will have no supplies.

One of the bikes we sell is the CarryMe. Many people love the CarryMe as it is small, compact and convenient to use. At 8.4kg, it is the lightest folding bike in the world. The unique frame is popular for its stylish design. It even comes in 9 frame colours.
