Hi! I am Schuyler, a Film, Sound and Video student from Ngee Ann Polytechnic currently interning as a Video Content Producer here at Mighty Velo, the folding bike specialist in Singapore.
Now you must be wondering, why is a film student interning here at a bicycle company? Well, to start off, let me take you through some of the things I have done so far.
Learning to build a bike from scratch
One of the first things I got to try was to build a Birdy bike from scratch. In the first week of my internship, I spent a day at our warehouse, building a Birdy New Classic from the ground up. I’m a very hands-on person and I like to be moving about and putting things together, so this experience was actually very fun and exciting for me.
While building my first bike, I learnt to identify bicycle parts such as the derailleur and bottom bracket (BB), as well as the difference between components such as the V-Brakes and Disc Brakes. This helped me to understand the parts of a bicycle better so that I know how to shoot bike photos and answer customers’ queries online and at our retail store.
In this internship, I am not restricted to just doing things within my job scope. Besides being a video content producer here, I also get to dip my hand in the marketing side of things by being at our retail store at Breadtalk IHQ to conduct bike test rides and talking face-to-face with our customers.
I get to answer bike enquiries and show customers how to use a performance foldable bike and how to fold and unfold them.
I also get to be part of a team, managing online enquiries and comments. Through this online experience, I am able to build my own self-confidence over time as I tackle these questions, both in product knowledge and myself in general.
Last but certainly not least, as a Video Content Producer Intern here at Mighty Velo, my main job is to create content for our different social media platforms. Such platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Youtube, Google, and even Tik Tok! (yes we have a TikTok account).
Alongside my other interns, we will see through each project from start to finish. From planning, to filming, to editing and uploading, we have almost complete creative control over our ideas! Of course, that’s also where the responsibility part comes in. We have to ensure that the information put out is current and factual (ETA for bikes, available frame colours, prices, etc.) so that our customers are not misinformed.
One of the most exciting things about interning at Mighty Velo is that we have full creative control over our photo and video shoots! Whenever we have a shoot, we will first plan where we want it to be conducted. Once a location is decided, we will then grab our desired bikes and head off.
Why I enjoy it is because besides it being just a shoot, it is also a chance for my colleagues and I to have fun and destress ourselves just cycling around visiting the many different landscapes in Singapore. We have definitely gotten closer through these sessions and I most certainly look forward to every one of them!
What to expect / What is expected
Now, what are some things that are expected of you when you work here at Mighty Velo?
First off, you need to be current and updated about events that are happening. This would mean reading the news frequently and regularly. Especially with the ongoing Covid-19 situation, it is very important to be constantly updated about the ever-changing situation. This is so that we as a company will know what we can or cannot do to protect ourselves and our customers.
For example, our retail store now only allows up to a maximum of six customers in the store at any one time. But if the situation gets better or gets worse, then we have to be alert about such information and use it to tweak how we operate so that it is best for the company and its customers.
You will also need to have an open mind and be able to handle multiple tasks at the same time. Being an SME, we do not have enough manpower for each person to be delegated a single task. Therefore, we have to be able to juggle multiple tasks and projects at a time.
Our tasks need not necessarily be in a certain scope (purely film-related tasks etc.), but they also include managing between replying to customers physically and remotely, shooting photo and video content, and scheduling posts on our social media platforms.
This means that we also have to have good time management, and not leave tasks untouched until the last minute to rush to do them.
What I like about being here at Mighty Velo
Personally, I like how I am able to get opportunities to learn and try out different aspects of being in an SME and what goes into making sure that the business runs smoothly on a daily basis.
In Singapore, the film industry is still relatively small. Therefore, a lot of the work done by filmmakers is geared more towards commercials and marketing. Interning as a video content producer here, I get to do that firsthand, by learning how to identify my target audience and then creating content tailored specifically for them, which I know will be of good use in the future, even in the context of shooting a film.
I also like the people around here. I believe that people are the ones who set the mood of the working environment, and not the job itself. My colleagues are very kind and friendly people. I can go to them whenever I face any difficulties and they would be more than happy to help me. I look forward to going to work every day because I know I am in a safe environment around them!
So to answer the question ‘What is a film student like me doing here at a bicycle company?’ Well, I believe I have already mentioned more than enough reasons for me to be here. I am definitely enjoying my time here at Mighty Velo!
