History

In 1992, cycling enthusiasts and talented inventors Markus Riese and Heiko Müller first came upon the ingenious idea of a bicycle with suspension pivots that doubled as folding mechanisms. Named “Birdy” because the suspension system allowed riding to feel as effortless as flying, their prototype won awards and garnered buzz in their home country Germany. In 1994, Taiwanese entrepreneur George Lin of Pacific Cycles met Markus and Heiko and was immediately impressed by their invention. He invited the two of them to Taiwan to work with him towards developing the Birdy, utilizing Pacific Cycles’ considerable manufacturing ability. In 1995, the Gen 1 Birdy bicycle hit the market in Germany for the first time. Fast forward to now, Birdy bicycles, now utilizing Gen 3 monocoque frames, are sold worldwide, with various models capable of tackling almost any niche. 

A versatile fold

The Birdy currently boasts the world record for the fastest folding time, at 4.9 seconds. Of course, it takes some practice to get that fast, but that record stands as a testament to the ingenious and intuitive way with which all Birdy bicycles can be folded down into a much more compact form.  While folded down, Birdy bicycles can be easily rolled around and brought onto public transport, or stored inside car trunks, closets, or even under desks. You can bring Birdy bicycles absolutely anywhere you go. Birdy bicycles maintain that flexibility once unfolded. Unlike many other folding bike brands, Birdy bikes usually have a wide gear range that can stretch up to 24 speeds, allowing them to tackle slopes and uneven terrain. Models such as the Birdy GT and JK11 Gravel are even better equipped to ride over almost any kind of terrain. They’re made to handle roads, parks, sidewalks, and off-road trails. But that’s not all. Birdy bikes are highly customisable and most parts, components, and upgrades that work with conventional bikes can also be installed on Birdy bikes. A comfortable ride

The Birdy utilizes a full front and rear suspension system that keeps cyclists in control and in contact with the ground, even on poorly conditioned roads. Vibrations and bumps are significantly diminished, allowing cyclists to enjoy a smooth and comfortable ride. The seat posts and stems of each Birdy bicycle are also fully adjustable, allowing riders to find the perfect seating position for optimum comfort. No matter who you are, or how fast or far you’re riding, the Birdy makes each ride feel effortless and weightless – almost like you’re flying.

Elite Performance

Small wheels mean less performance, right? Not so with Birdy. Unlike most foldable bicycles, each Birdy incorporates its folding mechanism into its suspension system, meaning it doesn’t have any hinges on its main frame. This gives it the same frame stability as a normal bike, improving handling and control.  It also allows for each Birdy bicycle’s trademark Gen 3 monocoque frame – sleek, aerodynamic single shell frames that are remarkably lightweight. The heaviest Birdy bike is still under 12kg, and the lightest a mere 10.8kg, meaning they’re both easy to carry around and capable of high speeds on the road. Everything about the Birdy is designed for high performance in a small package: highly responsive disc brakes, rigid frames with a low center of gravity, and other components carefully selected for impeccable specifications. Single-Shell Monocoque Frame

The Birdy's trademark Gen 3 monocoque frames are sleek, aerodynamic, and lightweight. They’re constructed out of a single piece with no hinges, allowing the frames to be remarkably rigid and robust in order to provide excellent handling and control.

We build Birdy Bicycles from scratch

All our Birdy bicycles are hand-built from scratch here in Singapore. Our dedicated technicians meticulously assemble the bicycles from components that come in 3 different boxes. We also rigorously test and check them to ensure they meet the high standards of both Mighty Velo and the Birdy Bicycle brand.
