Birdy Jungle Explorer vs Birdy P45: Which Limited Edition Folding Bike is Right for You?

Birdy bikes have long been known for pushing the limits of what folding bikes can do. From sleek road bikes to rugged gravel rides, their lineup offers something for every kind of rider. In fact, even the most entry-level Birdy model is engineered for high performance and aesthetic appeal, meaning that Pacific Cycles didn’t even release a limited edition model until 2020, where the Birdy P40 was made available. All 1000 units of the P40 were swiftly claimed, proving strong demand for more limited edition Birdy bikes!

Thus, two more exclusive and eye-catching creations were introduced: the Birdy Jungle Explorer and the Birdy P45. Each one is a super-rare and premium bike, crafted with care and precision to suit a specific kind of highly discerning cyclist.

But which one is right for you?

In this article, we’ll break down the features, strengths, and intended uses of both models!

Meet the Limited Edition Models

Birdy Jungle Explorer

Released in 2024, the Jungle Explorer is built for adventure. Only 150 units were released worldwide, and only 3 still remain – all available exclusively at Mighty Velo. It’s a rare gem for bike collectors and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

The Jungle Explorer has a striking two-tone frame in field brown and brushed silver, as uniquely stylish as it is rugged. Its handlebar has a low-riser swept-back design you won’t find on any other Birdy, for a more ergonomic and comfortable grip.

Its components are built to excel in rough terrain and off-road conditions, truly living up to its name. Wide, knobbly Billy Bonkers tyres are versatile enough to be used in almost any environment, from the road to the PCN to gravel paths and off-road trails. Juin-Tech R1 cable-actuated hydraulic disc brakes ensure reliable stopping power even when going downslope or in wet weather. The SRAM X5 10-speed derailleur gives you a wide enough gear range to tackle most terrain types, while still being capable of shifting smoothly.

The components aren’t the only special thing about it, however. The Jungle Explorer comes with 5 free gifts worth a whopping $1,200. These free gifts include: a Birdy rear expedition rack (with roller wheels) and front rack to hold all your gear and essentials, a Birdy kickstand, and a made-in-Germany Ortlieb waterproof pannier bag.

You’ll even get a Birdy-branded, khaki brown tent made for two people, with its own carrier bag. This exclusive item cannot be found anywhere else, and is perfect for a spontaneous bikepacking trip.

The Birdy Jungle Explorer is available for $4,500.

Birdy P45

Only recently having touched down in Singapore, the Birdy P45 is in high demand. Just 300 brushed silver units were released worldwide, and NONE remains available for purchase here in Singapore – all of Mighty Velo’s 10 P45s were quickly sold out!

The Birdy P45 was designed to celebrate Birdy’s 30th anniversary and Pacific Cycles’ 45th anniversary, and is a fantastic tribute to engineering and design excellence. It has a hydroformed unibody main frame with a sleek, futuristic shape that’s distinct from other Birdy bikes. Its frame colour, brushed silver, is totally unique and made with architectural-grade powder coating, giving it both durability and elegance. At 10.6 kg, it’s one of the lightest full-suspension folding bikes ever made.

Its componentry is made to reinforce its status as a high-end, high-performance folding bike. The P45 is the only Birdy model to come with a dropbar, and its other cutting-edge components include a SRAM Apex 11-speed derailleur, 20” Hubsmith wheelsets, Selle Italia saddle, Juin-Tech GT-P 4-piston brakes, and more. If you’re looking for a bike that performs well to the highest degree at high speeds,  the P45 will live up to expectations.

Every inch of the Birdy P45 has been impeccably designed and customized, from the unique headbadge on the frame, to the laser-etched honeycomb pattern on the chainring, to the Birdy 30th anniversary logo on the wheelset. The P45 is a bike that rides fantastically and is impossible to forget or overlook thanks to its highly distinctive appearance.

It even comes with an exclusive limited edition Birdy-branded waterproof cylindrical bag!

The Birdy P45 was available for $5,500, although it has since been sold out.

Comparing the Limited Edition Models

Frame & Design

The Birdy Jungle Explorer is rugged and practical. It’s equipped with the tried-and-tested Birdy G3 monocoque frame, although its two-tone field brown and brushed silver frame colour is totally unique to it.

The Birdy P45, in contrast, has a lightweight and aerodynamic hydroformed main frame with a unique shape. It comes with an eye-catching brushed silver frame colour.

Both bikes have unique decals indicating their limited edition status, but the P45 invests more heavily in this department, with a laser-etched custom honeycomb pattern on the chainring, Birdy 30th anniversary logos on the wheelset, and a custom headbadge.

Handlebar Style

The Birdy Jungle Explorer features swept-back, low riser handlebars for a more comfortable and ergonomic grip on long rides and over rough terrain. Notably, this handlebar design cannot be found elsewhere – it’s unique to the Jungle Explorer!

The Birdy P45 is the only Birdy model to feature a dropbar. This encourages an aggressive, forward-leaning posture for aggressive road riding.

Tyres

The Jungle Explorer features rugged, all-terrain Schwalbe Billy Bonkers tyres that provide grip and cushioning in almost any riding environment, rain or shine.

The P45 has Panaracer Minits Tough tyres which are slick and optimized for speedy road racing.

The Jungle Explorer’s wheelset is 18”, meaning that its tyres can be swapped out for many other tyres stocked at Mighty Velo, including Big Apple tyres, CST tyres, and more. The P45 has a 20” wheelset, so it’s more difficult to find tyres that it can equip.

Gearing, Drivetrain, and Brakes

The Jungle Explorer has a 10-speed SRAM X5 derailleur offering maximum versatility and smooth shifting on rough terrain and slopes. It also has Juin-Tech R1 cable-actuated hydraulic brakes that grant stopping power even when going downslope in wet weather.

The P45 has a 11-speed SRAM Apex derailleur that’s efficient and reliable at high speeds on smooth roads. Its Juin-Tech GT-P 4-piston disc brakes provide exceptional braking power and precision even at high speeds.

Additionally, the P45 has a narrow-wide chainring design that ensures there will be no chain drop. The chainring itself has a laser-etched honeycomb pattern and Birdy logo.

Free Accessories

The Jungle Explorer certainly is a winner in this department, with a whopping $1,200 worth of free accessories coming with each unit. It comes with a Birdy kickstand, front rack, and rear expedition rack (with roller wheels) installed. It even comes with a free, made-in-Germany, Ortlieb waterproof pannier bag.

The most impressive free gift it comes with, however, is likely the Birdy-branded camping tent (for two). This khaki brown tent is valued at $500, comes with its own carrier bag, and can’t be found anywhere else.

The Birdy P45 comes with just one free accessory: a Birdy-branded waterproof cylindrical bag to store essentials. This bag also cannot be found anywhere else.

Which bike suits you best?

You should choose the Birdy Jungle Explorer if you enjoy bikepacking, camping, or exploring off-road trails, due to its nature as an adventurous all-terrain bike that comes with its own tent.

You should also choose it if comfort, durability, and utility are more important to you than pure speed, as the Jungle Explorer definitely prioritizes versatility over speed in its componentry and design (although it can be fast as well).

Lastly, as only 150 units were produced worldwide, as compared to 300 brushed silver units of the P45, you should choose the Jungle Explorer if you want something truly rare and unique.

How about the Birdy P45? Well, you should choose the P45 if you’re a road cyclist looking for a fast, responsive ride, since the P45 is kitted out for the best performance at high speeds.

If you appreciate innovative engineering and design, you would also likely prefer the P45, with its innovative hydroformed main frame and other top-of-the-line components and traits.

Finally, as the P45 is more immediately eye-catching and aesthetically stylish due to its unique shape, brushed silver colour and many special decal details, you should choose the P45 if you’re drawn to exclusive collector’s models that look as special as they perform.

Conclusion

Both the Birdy Jungle Explorer and the Birdy P45 are premium limited-edition high-performance folding bikes that offer unique experiences. The Jungle Explorer is an adventurer that can go anywhere and carry everything you need. The P45 is a speed-focused, superbly engineered road machine. Both are statement pieces built to perform.

However, only the Jungle Explorer is still available in the wild! Only 10 units of the Birdy P45 came to Singapore, and all ten were quickly sold out. Three Jungle Explorers remain in the whole world – exclusively available in Mighty Velo.

If you’re a bike collector looking for something truly rare and extraordinary, this might be your last chance! Come down to our store to view the Jungle Explorer in person and place an order, before they disappear for good.
